Introduction to School Streets

Schools Streets are where motorised traffic is restricted during school pick-up and drop-off times to make the space outside schools safer for people walking, cycling and wheeling to school.

Leeds City Council launched School Streets in June 2020 as a trial that extended to 14 sites. Following a 18 month trial an evaluation of the scheme was undertaken alongside the charity Living Streets. The recommendations of the evaluation were presented to Highways Board in December 2022.

One of the key recommendations was to agree and apply selection criteria to ensure future School Streets were located at suitable locations (see below flow diagram). This survey aims to allow us to assess the stage 1 criteria for your school.

The success of any School Street is reliant on the commitment of the school. Therefore please only complete this survey if you are employed or have a direct association with the school (ie. School Governor)

Completion of the survey is the first part of a process to launch a School Street. Further steps including traffic counts, consultation with residents, parents and local councillors as well other council departments will be required prior to implementation

The information you provide when completing the survey will be used by the Council (as data controller), to support future School Street sites.

Your details will be held in accordance with the UK GDPR, and, excepting if required by law, will not be shared with any third parties apart from the Council’s partner organisations - the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and Smart Survey who administer this survey as a data processor. Full details of how Leeds City Council will process your personal information are contained within our Privacy Statement which can be found at www.leeds.gov.uk/privacy-statement/privacy-notice. The survey is voluntary and by completing it you confirm that you agree with the terms and conditions of the Privacy Statement.
